Newly acquired Manchester United goalkeeper, Andre Onana, has shed light on his decision to turn down the club’s iconic number one shirt, which was recently vacated by David de Gea.
Following De Gea’s departure from the Premier League giants this summer, the number one shirt became available for the new goalkeeper signing. However, to the surprise of many, Onana opted for the unusual No. 24 shirt upon his arrival at Old Trafford from Inter Milan last week.
Onana’s choice of the No. 24 shirt is significant as it represents his date of birth, the second of April (2/4). The Cameroonian shot-stopper has worn the same number previously during his time at Ajax and Inter, and he wanted to continue with it at Manchester United.
“I just like that number, and it’s my birthday, my date of birth. So for me, it’s great, and I like this shirt. With this number, we have achieved a lot, and I hope this will continue,” Onana explained in an interview with MUTV.
The talented goalkeeper has become the most expensive African goalkeeper in the world, and his decision to keep the No. 24 shirt holds personal significance for him.
