Angry mob burns house containing suspected stolen motorcycles, other items in Benue
An irate mob set fire to a property containing suspected stolen motorcycles and other items on George Akume Way in Makurdi, the capital of Benue State, on Friday.
The incident caused severe traffic congestion as commercial motorcyclists (Okada riders) blocked major roads, demanding that security agencies reveal the identity of the property owner.
The suspected stolen items were traced through a collaboration between the police and a motorcycle owner, who used a tracker to locate his missing vehicle at the house.
Upon discovering his motorcycle, the owner alerted fellow Okada riders. Together with police officers, they surrounded the building, forced entry, and found several motorcycles, sewing machines, and grinding machines—all believed to be stolen.
The police promptly evacuated the recovered motorcycles to E Division Police Station in Makurdi.
Angered by the discovery, the Okada riders barricaded George Akume Way and demanded that police vacate the property so they could set it ablaze.
Authorities have urged anyone with complaints regarding stolen motorcycles, grinding machines, sewing machines, or other household items to report to E Division Police Station in Wurukum, Makurdi.
