Benue South Senator and Senate Minority Leader, Abba Moro, has said the proposed Apa State is currently competing for the North Central slot in the ongoing constitutional review process on state creation.

Speaking during an interview on The Conversation, a programme monitored on IDOMA Television, Moro explained that the push for Apa State is not a personal ambition but a collective aspiration of the people.

“The creation of Apa State is actually not about me; it is about us,” he said.

According to the senator, the National Assembly’s Constitution Review Committee has received several proposals from different groups across the country seeking the creation of new states. He disclosed that the committee is considering recommending the creation of six or seven additional states.

Moro noted that the Southeast currently has five states, compared to six in most other geopolitical zones and seven in the Northwest. As part of efforts to address the imbalance, the committee is proposing the creation of an additional state in the Southeast to bring its number to six, as well as one new state in each of the six geopolitical zones.

He stated that Apa State is now in contention for the North Central slot, adding that there is growing sympathy from stakeholders in other states for its creation.

“The creation of Apa State is in contention for the slot from the North Central Zone. A sizable number of people from other states have shown sympathy for the proposal,” Moro said.

He expressed optimism that with sustained and strategic efforts, Apa State could secure the recommendation from the North Central.

“With some level of aggressive application of effort, Apa State will pick the ticket from North Central. We are hopeful and excitedly looking forward to that,” he added.
