The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has apprehended Saleh Idris, a 56-year-old chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Roni Local Government Area, on allegations of sexually assaulting his 14-year-old housegirl. CSC Adamu Shehu, the spokesperson of the Jigawa State Command of NSCDC, confirmed the arrest in an official statement.
According to the victim’s brother, the suspect was taken into custody following his complaint that Idris had raped and impregnated his younger sister, who served as a house-help in the suspect’s residence. Initially, efforts were made to reach an agreement through the Hisba office, but Idris continued to pressure the family to terminate the pregnancy.
The victim’s ordeal began when the suspect offered her a drink while his wife was not at home, causing her to lose consciousness. He subsequently took advantage of her. After regaining consciousness, the victim was threatened by Idris, preventing her from disclosing the incident under the threat of losing her monthly allowances. This pattern of abuse persisted until the pregnancy became evident.
CSC Adamu Shehu explained that upon questioning, the suspect denied the allegations, and the case has been taken to court. The case is in violation of section 3 of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act of Jigawa State and is punishable under the same Act.
