ARISE TV anchor, Somtochukwu Maduagwu killed in Abuja robbery

ARISE News Channel is mourning the death of one of its promising journalists, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, who was killed during an armed robbery at her home in Katampe, Abuja, in the early hours of Monday.

Maduagwu, popularly known as Sommie, was 29 years old.

She served the station as a news anchor, reporter, and producer, and was regarded as a trusted voice by viewers nationwide.

In a statement posted on its official X handle, ARISE News described her as “a vibrant voice that engaged and connected with our viewers,” adding that she was not only a respected broadcaster but also a lawyer and supportive colleague.

“It is with heavy hearts that the management and staff of ARISE News Channel announce the passing of our beloved colleague… Sommie tragically passed away in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025, following an armed robbery incident at her residence in Katampe that is being investigated by the Nigeria Police,” the statement read.

Tributes have since poured in from journalists, civil society groups, members of the legal profession, and viewers, many of whom have demanded swift justice and accountability.

ARISE News extended condolences to her parents, siblings, friends, and loved ones, noting that while her voice is now silent, her “spirit, passion, and legacy will endure.”

Police investigations into the killing are ongoing.
