Army storms notorious bandit Konyo Mbise’s hideouts in Benue, recovers weapons, others

Troops of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), in collaboration with other security agencies, have dismantled several notorious bandit camps linked to the wanted gang leader Konyo Mbise in the Akwaza area of Katsina-Ala Local Government Area, Benue State.
According to a statement from the Nigerian Army, the raid is part of ongoing efforts to rid the area of criminal elements and ensure a safe and peaceful farming season across the state.
The operation, carried out on May 18, 2025, involved the 72 Special Forces Battalion of OPWS, working in close synergy with other security outfits. The troops stormed the targeted camps in Konyo Gbise near Akwaza and successfully neutralized threats within the area.
During the raid, several items were recovered, including a submachine gun with a magazine, a locally fabricated rifle, 7.62mm special ammunition, a rifle butt and barrel, and 9mm rounds. Other items seized included three POS machines, two power generators, a mobile phone, electrical cables, a painting machine, and seven solar panels. The troops also found half a bag of suspected cannabis sativa, along with different portraits of wanted bandit leaders.
Commander of OPWS, Major General Moses Gara, applauded the troops for the successful operation and encouraged them to continue mounting pressure on all criminal elements threatening peace in the region. He also called on residents of Benue State to support military efforts by providing timely and credible information about criminal activities.
