Arsenal legends Robert Pires, Emmanuel Eboue, Sol Campbell, and other footballers are currently in Nigeria for the maiden edition of the Attom Charity Champions Cup.

The Charity Champions Cup, an initiative of the Attom Foundation, will be held at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja on June 15.

This exhibition match will pit football legends worldwide against notable Nigerian celebrities.

Yahaya Attom, the founder of the Attom Foundation, stated that the championship aims to raise funds and awareness to help at least 10,000 Nigerians, particularly the elderly, address vision problems caused by refractive errors, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, Arsenal legend Emmanuel Eboue described Nigeria as his home and expressed his happiness to reunite with ex-Super Eagles stars.

“We are here to make people happy. Some people see us on TV but they have never seen us in real life. We are here to tell them that we are here. We want them to come to the stadium tomorrow (Saturday) and see us. It’s good to meet them. I’m here with my brothers to make people happy,” Eboue said.

Renowned actor Emmanuel Ogonna Iwueke on his part, noted that the foundation had acquired four mobile eye clinics, with plans to have at least one in each of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

“The Charity Champions’ Cup stands as a testament to making a difference. This initiative embodies the essence of our foundation, uniting legendary footballers, celebrities, and individuals from all walks of life to tackle a critical healthcare need – eye care for the elderly in Nigeria,” he said.

Also speaking, Super Eagles captain, Kenneth Omeruo, commended the organizers for the initiative.

He Omeruo said, “This is a very important day for Nigeria. I saw it as very important because I, as a person, am concerned about doing something for the blind because there are a couple of them my foundation contributes to.

“When the founder, Yahaya Attom, told me the idea behind this, I was excited and it’s actually in my city as well, Abuja, so why wouldn’t I be here? And it’s good to be here. I’ve not seen some other celebrities; JJ is here, Kanu is here, and it’s important to have them. I will be ready tomorrow. I don’t know if I would be on the pitch as a goalkeeper because I’m still recovering.”
