Danny Ings and Emiliano Buendia both got on the scoresheet as Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa beat Frank Lampard’s Everton 2-1 at home to earn their first Premier League victory of the season.
Shortly after the half-hour mark, the hosts were ahead as Ollie Watkins found Ings just inside the box and the Villa striker turned and flashed a venomous left-footed finish past Jordan Pickford.
Villa doubled their advantage in the 86th minute as Buendia played a quick one-two with Watkins in the box and tucked into an empty net — a goal which proved crucial for Gerrard’s side.
Just a minute later, Everton halved the deficit as debutant Amadou Onana burst to the byline and fired a ball across goal that former Toffees defender Lucas Digne inadvertently turned into his own net to set up a tense finish — but the hosts held on to win.
