At 65, Nigeria Still Struggles with Corruption, Insecurity, Leadership Deficits – Ochapa

As Nigeria marks its 65th Independence anniversary, Hon. Isaac Odang Ochapa has lamented the country’s persistent challenges despite 25 years of uninterrupted democratic rule.

Ochapa, in a statement on Sunday, said that while Nigeria has recorded notable progress in political stability, economic growth, education, and literacy, the gains have been undermined by corruption, insecurity, economic inequality, and poor leadership recruitment.

He stressed that the survival of democracy in Nigeria must guarantee tangible benefits for all citizens, noting that accountable leadership, transparency, sincerity of purpose, and prioritizing the welfare of the people above personal interests remain crucial to national development.

“Nigeria is blessed with numerous talents and skill sets to shape a stronger, resilient, self-reliant, and productive nation, with our vast natural resources securing a prosperous future for our children,” Ochapa stated.

He urged leaders and citizens alike to urgently rise to the occasion of saving the country from lagging behind among its peers in the global community.

Ochapa further called for continuous efforts to strengthen the nation’s democratic foundations, create a level playing field, and intentionally select visionary leaders capable of putting Nigeria on the path of sustainable growth and development.

Nigeria today marks 65 years of independence as citizens take notes of the gains of 25 years of continual democratic system since 1999, it is central to intimate the gains and possible areas of deficit of the journey so far.

Noteworthy paces have been made in political solidity, economic evolution, education and literacy figures not overlooking the quality of life of citizens and the state of healthcare delivery. Nevertheless, trials and interference such as corruption index, insecurity, economic inequalities, and systemic incompetence and Leadership qualities and recruitment process of political office holders leave lots to be desired.

It is critical for Nigerian leaders and citizens to discourse these issues with willpower and chastisement to bring to Nigerians the needed gains of democratic rules, As the survival of democracy in Nigeria must guarantee palpable benefits to all Nigerians.

Nurturing accountable leadership, encouraging transparency in democratic engagement, sincerity of purpose and ranking the welfare of the people above every personal gain is focal to our development as a nation.
