The LaLiga match scheduled for Sunday between Atletico and Sevilla has been called off due to an “extraordinary” forecast of heavy rainfall in the Spanish capital, prompting local authorities to advise residents to remain indoors.
“Facing the exceptional weather situation in Madrid … the President of the RFEF, the Sports Minister and the CEOs of Atlético de Madrid and Sevilla, has taken the decision to postpone the match. The new date and time of the match will be communicated soon,” LaLiga said in a statement on Sunday.
A severe weather warning was issued by AEMET for the regions of Madrid, La Mancha, and Andalusia.
Luis Martínez Almeida, the mayor of Madrid, has urged the public to stay at home as the city anticipates “the most substantial rainfall in the past 49 years” on Sunday afternoon.
Atletico currently occupies the second position in the LaLiga standings with seven points, sharing the same point total with Girona, Barcelona, and Cadiz, trailing league leaders Real Madrid by five points.
