Australia kick off 2023 WWC with hard-fought victory against Ireland

The 2023 Women’s World Cup kicked off with an enthralling Group B clash between co-hosts Australia and debutant Republic of Ireland, and it was the hosts who came out on top with a hard-fought 1-0 win on Thursday.

The decisive moment came in the 51st minute when Australia’s Steph Catley confidently converted a penalty after Hayley Raso was brought down inside the box. Catley’s precision from the spot secured the crucial victory for the Australian team, igniting celebrations among the home crowd.

In the opening game of the tournament, another co-host, New Zealand, caused a major upset by defeating 1995 Women’s World Cup winners Norway with a 1-0 victory.

With the action heating up in Group B, all eyes are now set on the next fixture, where Nigeria’s Super Falcons are gearing up to take on Canada in a highly-anticipated clash on Friday at 3:30 am (Nigerian time).
