The Police in Katsina have confirmed that terrorists operating in the Kankara Local Government Area of the state, have killed 5 Mobile Police, Mopol personnel on special duty, and 4 other persons at Gatakawa Village in the state.
Police spokesman, Superintendent Gambo Isah who confirmed the incident, said the Mopol officers who are from Kano,
were on special duty.
He further added that the area is now calm as normalcy has since been restored.
According to Isah, “On Wednesday, July 20, at about 5:30 pm, over 300 terrorists armed with AK-47 rifles, General Purpose Machine Guns, GPMG, and other sophisticated weapons on motorcycles, attacked the officers’ base, between Sheme-Kankara Road and killed 5 of them.
One of them is said to be from Mopol 9, Kano.
They also attacked Gatakawa Village and killed 3 members of the community”.
Also confirming the incident, a source in the area said, among the 4 persons killed, were 3 important personalities, all elderly and 1 youth.
He added that the victims tried to escape through some farmlands, where they were killed by the terrorists.
Isah added that the Deputy Commissioner, DC Operations has been deployed with immediate effect by the Commissioner of Police to the area, and has already taken charge of the whole situation.
The 4 persons killed at Gatakawa Village, have since been buried.
The killing of the 5 Mobile Policemen is coming barely 2 weeks, after the Area Commander of Dutsinma, Assistant Commissioner of Police, ACP, Aminu Umar was killed by terrorists, in the Zakka Forest of Safana Local Government Area, where he led his men on a clearance operation.
The two Local Government Areas, Kankara and Safana, border each other.
