Spanish La Liga club Barcelona is on the verge of securing a potential summer transfer deal for Manchester City defender Joao Cancelo. Reports indicate that personal terms have already been agreed upon by the player and the Catalan club, and negotiations are underway between the two clubs to finalize the transfer.

The nature of the deal, whether it will be a loan or a permanent transfer, is yet to be confirmed. Cancelo spent the latter half of the previous season on loan at Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga before returning to Manchester City.

BarcelonaBlaugranes.com reported that Barcelona has prioritized Cancelo as a key target for their summer transfer plans. Discussions have already commenced between the Spanish champions and Manchester City regarding the potential move.

In addition to Cancelo, Barcelona is also eyeing a deal for his Manchester City teammate, Bernardo Silva. This could make Cancelo the third City player targeted by Barcelona this summer, following the earlier acquisition of Ilkay Gundogan.

As Barcelona looks to reinforce their squad, the potential departure of Ousmane Dembele to Paris Saint-Germain, along with the expected exits of Frank Jessie and Clement Lenglet from Camp Nou, will create a need for new signings. The funds generated from player sales will likely be utilized to secure the club’s transfer targets.

Joao Cancelo joined Manchester City from Serie A giants Juventus in the summer of 2019, signing a six-year contract with the English club. In the 2022/23 season, Cancelo delivered impressive performances, scoring two goals and providing one assist in 17 Premier League appearances for Manchester City. During his loan spell at Bayern Munich, he netted one goal and contributed four assists in 15 Bundesliga matches.

Both Manchester City and Barcelona clinched their respective league titles last season, with 89 points each from 38 matches in their respective divisions.
