Battle Royale in Enone: Okpokwu stakeholders demand House of Reps seat returns after 14 years, Ado insists tenure must remain till 2031
As political momentum builds ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency, popularly known as Enone, has become the epicentre of fierce political jostling in Benue South.
IDOMA VOICE observed that the Enone seat, currently occupied by Hon. Philip Agbese of Ado LGA, is drawing early interest from heavyweight contenders mainly from Okpokwu, a district now pushing for a return to the National Assembly after 14 years of absence.
Rotation politics remains the major source of contention. Since democracy returned in 1999, representation in Enone has followed a loosely-adhered zoning arrangement: Sam Obande – Ado (1999–2003), David Onobi Idoko – Okpokwu (2003–2011) Hassan Anthony Saleh – Ogbadibo (2011–2019) and back to Ado between 2019 and 2023, continuing with Philip Agbese from 2023 to date.
However, ahead of the 2027 polls, Okpokwu leaders have argued that the pendulum should naturally swing back to them, but Ado are insisting it has served only one of two terms like the others and therefore deserves to retain the seat until 2031.
This clash of claims has set the stage for what analysts have described as the most intense contest in the history of Enone representation.
The incumbent: Philip “Okanga” Agbese under watch
Hon. Philip Agbese is widely expected to seek a second term and his supporters said performance, not zoning, should determine who goes to Abuja.
Agbese enjoys growing popularity due to his visible interventions, philanthropic outreach and vocal representation in the House. Many argued that “you don’t remove a striker who is still scoring goals because of tradition.”
But despite his strong credentials, the agitation for rotation remains loud and persistent.
The Okpokwu octet
While Ogbadibo is still consulting quietly, Okpokwu has already produced eight strong aspirants, a clear signal that negotiations will not be simple.
Below is an expanded view of the top figures leading the charge:
Hon. Inalegwu Ejembi Adaje (Edumoga District)
Adaje is seen as a rising star, young, articulate and driven by strong ideological conviction.
His political grooming has been shaped by active participation in youth advocacy, community engagements and collaboration with senior stakeholders in his party, ADC.
Across political parties, Adeje is widely viewed as the only contender with genuine structure, consistency, and grassroots acceptance.
His politics is not built on noise or seasonal visibility; it is rooted in long-term engagement, accessibility, and service to the ordinary people.
Adaje presents himself as the face of youth-driven governance, a narrative resonating strongly among first-time voters.
Dr. Raphael Odoh (Okpoga District)
A highly experienced contender, Dr. Odoh is a well-known education entrepreneur, founder of Metro Schools, Abuja and Apa College of Education, Okpoga. He has contested in 2023 where came second on Labour Party platform, and has since built a formidable political structure over time.
Considered the most seasoned among the aspirants, Odoh commands deep respect among local and diaspora stakeholders. His supporters insisted that 2027 may finally be “his time,” as his blend of exposure and grassroots rapport places him in a strong negotiating position across party line.
Hon. Igoche Ameh (Edumoga District)
Ameh combines youthfulness with deep political networking. The successful businessman has quietly financed multiple community interventions while maintaining strong ties with Enone’s political elites.
His influence among young people, especially in Edumoga, positions him as one of the most vibrant and well-mobilized candidates. Polciitical observers said his pragmatic leadership style and strong campaign strategy could make him a top contender if APC throws its weight behind him.
Hon. Richard Ejoha (Okpoga District)
Though not as public-facing as some others, Ejoha has spent years cultivating vital relationships inside the APC hierarchy. He is regarded as a strategic mobiliser with institutional knowledge of political dynamics in the constituency.
His measured approach has earned him a reputation as a quiet but effective force, one who may not show his hand until the decisive moment.
Hon. Anthony Agom (Okpoga District)
Currently representing Okpokwu in the Benue State House of Assembly, Agom recently defected to APC, a move seen as a tactical step toward his federal ambition. His legislative experience and strong grassroots acceptance in Edumoga give him a functional advantage.
However, he must navigate sensitive party power blocs, especially with multiple APC hopefuls eyeing the same ticket. Many believe that if the APC decides to reward loyalty and proven governance experience, Agom stands a very bright chance.
Hon. Okoriko Abah (Okpoga District)
Hon. Okoriko Abah stands out among the Okpokwu aspirants as a technocrat with a heart for service. With a decades-long career in the insurance sector, Abah brings a rare combination of financial expertise, strategic thinking and community-focused leadership to the Enone political arena.
Over the years, he has quietly leveraged his resources to uplift communities within Okpoga and beyond, funding educational initiatives, vocational programs, and infrastructure projects that directly impact the lives of ordinary citizens.
His approach is often described as “silent philanthropy”, as he prioritizes results over publicity, letting his actions speak louder than words.
Among the youth and grassroots communities, Abah has gained admiration for his hands-on approach to development.
Politically, Abah is seen as a calm but formidable contender. Unlike the flashier aspirants, he has spent years cultivating relationships within party hierarchies, understanding constituency needs, and building a coalition of supporters who value competence over theatrics.
Observers say that if voters are seeking a representative who combines practical experience, policy knowledge, and a genuine commitment to community welfare, Abah is uniquely positioned to deliver.
With his technocratic credentials and deep roots in Okpoga, Abah promises a measured, effective, and people-driven representation in the House of Representatives, a voice capable of navigating the complexities of governance while ensuring that Enone’s developmental priorities are not sidelined.
Chief Williams Obande Obeya (Okpoga district)
Among the growing list of aspirants, Chief Williams Obande Obeya (Owujoi K’Idoma) stands out ,not just because of his name, but because of what that name represents. He is the son of the late Chief Obande Obeya, a revered political titan, traditional authority and conscience of the Idoma nation whose influence shaped democratic transitions in Benue State for decades.
Now, Williams, well-educated, corporate-seasoned and grounded in grassroots realities, is stepping forward to continue a legacy of principled politics.
Unlike those driven by desperation or personal advancement, he insisted his ambition is rooted in responsibility:
His message resonates strongly with the youth, traditional rulers, and the silent majority tired of transactional politics. Supporters say his emergence signals a reawakening of the Obeya doctrine, a brand of politics that puts people first, not personal enrichment.
Hon. Ikwumonu Innocent Agbo “Demello” (Edumoga District)
Widely regarded as a natural leader with an imposing yet humble presence, Hon. Ikwumonu Agbo, also known as Demello, has grown into a household name in Okpokwu politics.
A successful entrepreneur and CEO/Managing Director of Demello Oil & Gas Ltd, he represents the class of private-sector achievers stepping forward to redefine representation beyond rhetoric.
His supporters describe him as “ordained for leadership”, a man who believes public office is a divine calling to transform communities, not a personal elevation. With deep roots in Edumoga and strong influence among the business-driven youth population across Enone, Demello has consistently shown capacity in job creation, empowerment initiatives and community support programs.
He is considered by many as a credible emerging force capable of injecting fresh energy and strategic innovation into federal representation.
What does Enone truly want in 2027 — continuity or correction?
IDOMA VOICE observes that the coming months will reveal who can build the strongest alliances, win the hearts of voters and convince Enone that they hold the key to its future aspirations. Whether the eventual flagbearer emerges through zoning, popularity, party strength or sheer strategy, 2027 will be the ultimate battleground, where only one name will rise from a crowded arena of ambition to carry the hopes of Ado, Okpokwu and Ogbadibo to the Green Chamber.
For now, the race remains wide open.
Enone is watching. Benue South is listening. The battle has just begun. It is Battle Royale in Enone.
