Benevento were in the promotion play-offs, but now risk bankruptcy after President Oreste Vigorito announced he has no intention of registering the club for the new Serie B season.
They were in the top flight last term and came close to reaching the promotion play-off final, eliminated in the semi-final by Pisa.
In a shock move, today President Vigorito released a statement announcing he would not be registering the club for the 2022-23 season in Serie B.
That means he refuses to balance the books and cover outstanding taxes to secure their financial stability and does not wish to carry on as patron.
Vigorito confirmed he will meet with Mayor Clemente Mastella next week to hand over the keys of the club and give the local authorities the job of finding a new owner.
It doesn’t give them much time, as the balanced books must be handed in next month to register for the new Serie B season.
Otherwise, there is the risk Benevento won’t be registered and will instead be dropped down to Serie D.
The Vigorito family took over the club when it was in Serie C2 in 2005, taking Le Streghe to their first ever Serie A campaign in 2020-21.
