Benue Assembly extends ex-Speaker Dajoh’s suspension by six months
The Benue State House of Assembly has prolonged the suspension of its former Speaker, Mr. Hyacinth Dajoh, adding another six months to the earlier sanction.
The decision was reached during Tuesday’s plenary after a motion was introduced by Mr. Terna Shimawua (APC/Kyan), who sought a review of Dajoh’s previous punishment.
The motion was titled, “Motion to Review the Suspension of Hyacinth Dajoh (Gboko West State Constituency) from Legislative Duties.”
Dajoh had first been suspended on August 26 for three months over allegations that he attempted to spearhead an impeachment process against Governor Hyacinth Alia.
Presenting the motion, Shimawua said the ex-speaker had failed to show any sign of regret nor tendered an apology to the Assembly since the disciplinary measure was imposed.
He further alleged that while serving the initial suspension, Dajoh reportedly collaborated with former Majority Leader, Mr. Saater Tiseer (APC/Mbagwa), and former Minority Leader, Mr. Michael Audu (PDP/Adoka-Ugboju), in a fresh scheme to unseat the current Speaker, Mr. Alfred Emberga.
Shimawua criticised the behaviour, saying it was unacceptable for someone who once held the top legislative seat, noting that such actions fall short of expected leadership values.
“The conduct of Dajoh does not reflect the expectations of a leader, particularly following the recent change in the House leadership,” he said.
The motion was backed by all members present and seconded by Mr. Simon Gabo (APC/Mata).
Addressing the chamber, the Speaker underscored the importance of maintaining the honour of the Assembly, stressing, “Nobody is bigger than an institution.”
Emberga added that once the extended suspension lapses, Dajoh will be required to formally write the Office of the Speaker indicating his intention to return and must show genuine remorse by issuing a written apology before he can resume his duties.
The new suspension period became effective on November 25.
