The Benue State House of Assembly has approved a bill seeking to regulate the construction and placement of outdoor structures used for signage, hoardings and advertisements, alongside other connected purposes.

The legislation was adopted after it successfully passed its third reading during Tuesday’s plenary, which was led by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Berger Alfred Emberga.

With the new law, outdoor advertising activities in the state will now be properly controlled to enhance environmental appearance and boost revenue generation.

Lawmakers gave unanimous approval to the bill after resolving into a Committee of the Whole to deliberate on the report submitted by the House Standing Committee on ICT and Digital Economy.

The committee is chaired by Hon. Samuel Ismaila Agada, representing Ogbadibo State Constituency.

While presenting the report, Hon. Agada explained that effective enforcement of the law would significantly raise the state’s internally generated revenue.

He noted that the state could realize a projected two billion naira monthly once the Executive Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, signs the bill into law.

He further stressed that, aside from financial benefits, the legislation is expected to open up job opportunities for many young people across the state.

After a clause-by-clause consideration, the bill received full approval and was formally passed by the House.

Speaker Rt. Hon. Berger Alfred Emberga praised members for their commitment, detailed scrutiny and valuable contributions throughout the consideration of the bill and its committee report.

He also commended the House for ensuring the legislation received fast and efficient passage.
