Benue: Black Sunday in Agatu as herdsmen attack Idoma community

Suspected Fulani herdsmen in the late hours of Sunday again, attacked Odugbeho in Agatu LGA despite early warning.

Recall that the same Odugbeho was attacked last Sunday, resulting to 27 deaths and fatal injuries to 7 other people.

Confirming the latest attack, Isaac Oche, an indigene of the embattled village said, the invaders in a similar guerilla style, entered the village and started shooting from all angles, adding that all efforts by the youths to repel them couldn’t yield a full result as the attackers succeeded in burning down most of the houses.

“They came around 5:30pm similar to the time they came last Sunday. Our youths made frantic efforts to repel them but couldn’t due to their number and superior firepower. They have right now retreated to Olegobidu, a nearby village. We don’t know what may happen next”, he said.

Corroborating Isaac Oche’s narrative through a phone call, another eyewitness, Iyu Goche said, they called security agents when they heard the first gunshot but no action was taken by the security agents camping at Akwu, Obagaji and Oweto, adding that only God that would help them.

“We have seen that the persistent attacks on our land by herdsmen were conspiracies to takeover our land. How can one imagine that despite informing the security very early after receiving messages about imminent attack on Odugbeho, yet no single security agent was seen around the village until the attackers arrived and burnt our village”, he reechoed.

At the time of filing this report, no death was recorded and the Benue State Police Command was yet to react to the unfortunate incident.
