Benue community where it is forbidden to spend more than N100,000 on traditional marriage

In a move aimed at preserving Tiv traditions, HRM Prof. James Iorzua Ortese Ayatse, alongside Ijir Tamen, has spoken out against the practice of providing itemized lists for traditional marriage ceremonies in Tiv land.

This cultural norm, characterized by presenting prospective grooms with lengthy lists of required items, has been officially abolished by the Tiv Traditional Area Council.

Ijir Tamen emphasized the simplicity of the new protocol, outlining the revised requirements for traditional marriage:

1. Financial Contribution: Prospective grooms are now expected to provide a sum of N100,000.00 as a symbolic gesture. This amount represents the maximum allowable contribution and may be adjusted lower based on individual circumstances.

2. Elders’ Presence: Grooms are encouraged to attend the marriage proceedings accompanied by at least three respected elders from their community.

3. Dialogue with Bride’s Parents: The groom must formally approach the parents of the bride to express his intention to marry. Following this, the parents will engage their daughter directly to ascertain her consent. If she agrees, the groom presents the agreed-upon financial contribution of N100,000.00 and proceeds to take his bride home.

4. Celebration Venue: There will no longer be traditional marriage celebrations held at the bride’s family home. Instead, the groom will take his bride to his own home for the festivities.
