Five people lost their lives in Gboko area of Benue State on Tuesday when a Sharon vehicle rammed into people at a market.
The driver of the vehicle was said to have had a brake failure at the front of Temperance Hotel, Akaajime, within Gboko town, and in the process rammed into people on the roadside market.
An eyewitness, who identified himself simply as Jack, told one of our correspondents on the phone that the incident happened around 7pm on Tuesday.
“The vehicle was coming from Gboko town to Mkar, in the Gboko Local Government Area of the state when the incident happened.
“Five people were killed on the spot and 16 people were injured and receiving treatment at private hospitals in Gboko.
“There are 12 injured people at St. Joseph and four others at Atuna hospital in Gboko.”
The Chairman of Gboko LGA, James Kachina, who was accompanied by the leader of the Gboko legislative house, Peters Maaki, reportedly visited the hospitals on Wednesday.
Kachina said 16 injured people were in the two hospitals and pledged that the council would support them.
The state police spokesperson, SP Catherine Anene, who confirmed the accident, said two people were killed.
