Benue: Four kidnappers killed in Orokam gun battle
Four suspected kidnappers who had allegedly terrorised communities in Ogbadibo Local Government Area of Benue State have been killed during a security operation in Orokam.
The suspects were reportedly tracked by Nigerian military personnel working alongside members of a joint task force and local vigilante groups after an unsuccessful attempt to abduct a Catholic priest in Obollo-Afor, Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State.
According to security sources, the gunmen fled toward Benue State after the failed abduction, but were intercepted by troops near Orokam. A gun battle followed, during which four members of the gang were neutralised.
The incident has triggered celebrations among residents of Ogbadibo and surrounding communities, many of whom said they had endured years of fear due to the activities of the criminal group.
Locals identified the deceased suspects as part of a notorious gang responsible for frequent attacks along the Enugu–Otukpo highway, a key commercial corridor linking Benue and Enugu states.
For years, the area has been troubled by cases of kidnapping, armed robbery, and violent attacks, with travellers, traders, and business operators often targeted for ransom.
Residents expressed optimism that continued security operations would bring lasting peace and stability to the region.
As at the time of this report, security agencies had not released an official statement on the operation.
