The Executive Governor of Benue State, Rev Fr Dr Hyacinth Iormem Alia, has initiated the process of resettling and reintegrating Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the state back to their ancestral homes. Governor Alia, during his visit to the IDP camps in Makurdi and Guma Local Government Areas on July 26, 2023, expressed deep concern over the pitiable conditions in which a large number of displaced people are living, lacking basic necessities such as food, water, and shelter.
Acknowledging the support of the United Nations and other organizations in promoting global peace and security, Governor Alia emphasized that security remains a pressing issue in Benue State, particularly concerning conflicts between herders and farmers. He sought the assistance of the United Nations in implementing comprehensive security initiatives and conflict resolution mechanisms to establish a peaceful and secure environment for all Benue residents.
Governor Alia expressed confidence in his administration’s ability to put an end to insecurity and successfully reintegrate the IDPs into their ancestral homes. In the meantime, he assured the displaced people that the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) would provide them with food materials and other necessary assistance.
During the visit, Tar Abraham, the Chairman of the people residing at the unofficial camp in Afia, Makurdi Local Government Area, raised concerns about the lack of shelter, water, food, and healthcare facilities. He appealed to the Benue State Government for help in facilitating their return to their homes.
