Benue govt bans ‘unlawful gatherings’ as youths move to block Abuja-Makurdi highway over killings

The Benue State Government has strongly condemned the gruesome attack on Yelewata community in Guma Local Government Area, where over 200 people were reportedly killed by suspected criminal herdsmen, massacre, describing it as an “unnecessary bloodbath.”
Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia, through a press statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of lives, stating that “nothing should warrant the taking of life.”

On behalf of the Governor, the Deputy Governor, Barr. Sam Ode, visited the scene of the massacre earlier today and delivered the Governor’s message to the grieving community.
“Governor Hyacinth Alia acknowledges and shares in your pain and grief caused by this attack on your community by criminal elements suspected to be armed herdsmen,” Ode said. “The Governor is not resting on his oars to ensure the state experiences peace.”
To address the growing security crisis, the state government announced a series of new security measures, including:
Deployment of Tactical Teams: More security reinforcements from the Federal Government have started arriving in Benue State.
Activation of Response Squads: Special response squads are being deployed to flashpoints from Sunday to strengthen rapid intervention capacity.
Strategic Community Dialogues: The state is facilitating engagement with traditional rulers and community leaders to boost intelligence sharing and grassroots security.
Strengthening Joint Operations Units: Security collaboration among various agencies is being reinforced to deter further attacks.
In a move aimed at preventing escalation, the government also issued a stern warning against unlawful gatherings and confrontations, particularly by youths.
“We call on religious, traditional, and political leaders across the state to sensitize and guide the youths under their influence,” the statement urged, “to avoid unlawful gatherings that may spiral out of control.”
Residents have been advised to report any suspicious activity via official government communication channels and to rely only on verified information sources to stay informed.
The Benue State Government reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring justice, peace, and the protection of lives and properties of all residents, even as it continues to engage with federal security agencies for long-term solutions.
