Benue Govt reacts to Otukpo killings, promises to bring attackers to justice

Benue State Deputy Governor, Dr. Sam Ode, has condemned the killing of residents in Akpachi community in Ugboju District and Otukpo-Nobi community in Otukpo Local Government Area, describing the attacks as barbaric and unacceptable.

The attacks, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday, July 12, were reportedly carried out by suspected armed herders, leaving several innocent residents dead.

In a statement issued on Sunday by his Chief Press Secretary, Godwin Ikyereve, Ode expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and extended condolences to the families of the victims, the people of Akpachi and Otukpo-Nobi communities, as well as the entire Benue South Senatorial District.

He said the continued killing of innocent and peace-loving citizens poses a serious threat to the peace, security and development of Benue State.

The deputy governor disclosed that Governor Hyacinth Alia, who is currently away on official assignment, has been fully briefed on the attacks and has directed heads of security agencies in the state to immediately move to Otukpo to monitor, contain and decisively address the situation.

Ode assured residents that the state government remains committed to protecting lives and property, stressing that efforts are underway to ensure those behind the attacks are apprehended and prosecuted.

He called on residents of Benue South to remain calm, vigilant and law-abiding, urging them to cooperate with security agencies by providing credible and timely information to support ongoing operations.

The deputy governor also appealed to residents not to take the law into their own hands, assuring them that the government and security agencies are determined to restore normalcy and bring the perpetrators to justice.

He prayed for the repose of the souls of those killed and asked God to grant comfort and strength to their families and the affected communities.
