Reverend Father Hyacinth Alia, today, marks his first 100 days in office as the Governor of Benue State.
His ascent to the position was a significant political shift in the state, and his tenure has been closely watched by both supporters and critics alike, IDOMA VOICE reports.
Governor Alia’s journey to power began with a resounding victory at the polls. Running on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), he garnered overwhelming support from the people of Benue State. The margin between him and his closest rival was akin to the difference between heaven and earth, reflecting the voters’ confidence in his leadership.
A Slow Start:
Governor Alia’s first 100 days in office have been marked by a deliberate and measured approach. Upon assuming office, it took him 72 days to assemble his cabinet, and another 92 days to assign portfolios to his appointees. This cautious approach suggests that the governor is taking his time to carefully select individuals who will play crucial roles in his administration.
Financial Policies:
One of the most striking moves made by Governor Alia during his first 100 days was the freezing of the state’s government accounts, which remain frozen to this day. The reasons behind this decision have not been made public, leaving room for speculation and concern among citizens. It remains to be seen how this financial strategy will impact the state’s fiscal health in the long run.
Infrastructure Development:
Although the governor’s tenure has not seen major projects take off, there have been notable initiatives. Renovation work on the House of Assembly complex and the construction of roads within the city of Makurdi are among the most visible projects. The promise to open up feeder roads, including the Ihugh – Kiishi – Uka – Bunde road in Vandeikya Local Government area, has also been made.
Financial Management:
Governor Alia’s administration has claimed to rely solely on the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) for funding. They assert that this approach has been sufficient to cover salaries, numerous projects, and operating costs. The governor’s reported avoidance of borrowing from banks or organizations has been touted as a responsible financial strategy.
Modesty in Leadership:
One unique aspect of Governor Alia’s administration is his reported use of personal vehicles instead of investing heavily in official cars. This decision, if true, reflects a commitment to prudent financial management, although it has yet to be independently verified.
Mixed Reviews:
Opinions on Governor Alia’s first 100 days are divided among the residents of Benue State. Some argue that it is premature to judge his performance, while others express skepticism based on the governor’s “body language.” However, there are those who praise him for his cautious and measured approach to governance.
In interviews with some residents, including Dan Edache, Sunday Akogwu, Ken Sunday, Ter Fred, Agbo Agbo, and Ijaga Okwo, varying perspectives emerged. Expectations among the people seem high, and they anticipate more concrete action from the government as Governor Alia’s term progresses.
Dan Edache: “I believe it’s too early to pass judgment on Governor Alia. We should give him more time to show us what he can do for Benue State.”
Sunday Akogwu: “Governor Alia’s cautious approach is a positive sign. It shows he’s taking governance seriously, and I’m hopeful for the future.”
Ken Sunday: “I’m not entirely convinced by the governor’s actions so far. We need more concrete projects and transparency in his administration.”
As Governor Hyacinth Alia enters the next phase of his leadership journey, Benue State remains eager to witness the realization of his promises and the impact of his policies on the state’s development.
Whether his first 100 days are a sign of things to come or merely a cautious start, time will tell.
