Benue News Update: Latest Developments from Benue State – Friday, March 15, 2024
1. The Taraba state command of the Nigerian Police Force, NPF has confirmed the recovering of seven bodies of the eighteen seater bus that was was attacked by bandits on Tuesday.
The bus which Daily Post learnt to have left Zaki-Biam in the neighbouring Benue state, was said to have been heading to Maihula village in Taraba state when gunmen came calling.
2. Benue State Internal Revenue Service, BIRS, is to collaborate with the Operation Whirl stroke to wipe out all illegal checkpoints across the state.
The Acting Executive Chairman of BIRS ,Mr Emmanuel Agema disclosed this when he led the management team of BIRS on a courtesy visit to the Commander, Operation Whirl stroke, Major General Sunday Igbinomwanhia in his office.
3. The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, the Benue State University chapter, has suspended the strike it recently embarked upon.
This is according to a statement jointly signed by Kwaghfan Tarnongo and Terrumun Gajir, its Chairman and Secretary respectively, issued on Wednesday in Makurdi.
4. Benue State Governor Governor , Rev.Fr.Hyacinth Alia has forwarded to the Benue State House of Assembly for confirmation, eight names to serve as Chairman and Members of the Benue State Independent Electoral Commission ,BSIEC.
5. The Conscience of Yoruba Nation, an affiliate group of Afenifere, has rejected President federal government’s proposal for the provision of grazing zones in the South West, to stop herders/farmers crisis.
DAILY POST recalls that President Tinubu, recently urged the state governors in the country to provide land in their states for herders to graze on.
According to him, the development would make the frequent crises to be a thing of the past and put a stop to frequent loss of lives and farm produce.
6. The Chairman of Benue ethnic leaders and President General of Mzough U Tiv, MUT, worldwide, Iorbee Ihagh, has said that over 147 persons have been killed in the state by herdsmen militia in the last two months.
In a statement on Thursday in Makurdi, he warned that if the activities of the armed herdsmen were not checked the country faced the prospect of worsening food shortages later in the year since farmers might not be able to return to their farms with the coming of the rains.
