Benue: Nine jailed over kidnap of worshippers in Ado church attack
A court in Benue State has found nine out of 10 defendants guilty over their involvement in the abduction of worshippers at St. John Catholic Church in Ojeji, Ado Local Government Area, a case that had heightened fears about insecurity in the region.
The incident occurred during a night vigil, when the victims were taken captive, prompting a rapid response from combined security forces.
Based on actionable intelligence, security agencies carried out coordinated operations that led to the successful rescue of all nine victims unharmed.
The Police Intelligence Response Team spearheaded the initial crackdown, arresting four suspects and recovering AK-47 rifles along with ammunition.
Subsequent investigations led to more arrests, bringing the total number of suspects to 10.
Among those detained were Abubakar Jibril and Ashiru Ibrahim, whose apprehension provided vital information that helped break up the criminal syndicate.
After being charged in court, nine of the suspects were convicted and handed various prison sentences, while one suspect is still facing trial.
Reacting to the development, Ado Local Government Chairman, Sunny Oche, lauded the efforts of security agencies, including the police, DSS, and local vigilante groups.
He also acknowledged the support of Governor Hyacinth Alia, the Inspector General of Police, and Deputy Governor Sam Odeh in ensuring justice was served.
Oche noted that the verdict demonstrates a firm resolve to protect lives and rebuild public trust in the area.
