Benue records 183 road crashes in six months

The Corp Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Dr. Boboye Oyeyemi, disclosed, Thursday, that Benue State recorded over 183 road accidents within the first six months of the year, ranking it among the highest in the country.

The Corp Marshall, who made this known in Makurdi at the flag off of the Ember Months Road Safety Campaign, with the theme Speed Limiting Device and Tyre Safety Sensitisation, said the development called for concern among motorists and road users in the state.

Represented by Assistant Corp Marshal, Julius Agom, Oyeyemi said: “The figure places Benue State sixth in the list of states with cases of road crashes across the country.

“Researches show that over 50 percent of road crashes recorded in the country were caused by speeding.”

The state FRSC Sector Commander, Mr. Chidiebere Nkwonta, said the campaign would centre on educating motorists on the use of tyres, instruction of speed devices in commercial vehicles and sensitisation on road usage during the ember months.

State Chairman of the NURTW, Elder John Ishom, assured of the cooperation of his members to ensure safety on the highways.
