Benue South Senators since 1979: Chronicles of their time in office

From 1979 to 2003, Benue South Senatorial District has witnessed the tenures of several distinguished individuals who have represented the region in the Nigerian Senate.

Today, IDOMA VOICE takes a closer look at the senators who have held the seat and how they fared during their time in office.

Chief Ogiri Adejo Andrew, an accomplished lawyer from Adoka Otukpo LGA, was elected as the senator for Benue South in 1979. As one of the pioneers in the post-military era, Chief Andrew laid the foundation for effective representation and played a vital role in shaping the legislative landscape.

Following his tenure, Senator Okpe Godwin Idoko from Okpoga, Okpokwu LGA, took over the baton until 1984 when a military coup ousted the Shehu Shagari government. Despite the brevity of his time in office, Senator Idoko made significant contributions to the development of Benue South.

In 1991, under the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Senator Ameh Ebute, a lawyer by profession, stepped in and held sway as Senate President in 1993 before the military intervention.

Senator Ebute’s leadership and commitment to democratic principles left a lasting impact on the region.

With the return to democracy in 1999, a notable figure emerged to represent Benue South – David Mark. Mark, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), assumed the mantle and went on to win the senatorial seat in subsequent elections, cementing his position as a prominent figure in Nigerian politics.

Mark’s tenure as a senator spanned several terms, making him the longest-serving Senate President in Nigeria’s history. His ability to navigate the intricacies of politics and connect with the people of Benue South endeared him to his constituents. Despite facing tough electoral challenges, Mark consistently secured victory, demonstrating his popularity and effective representation.

In 2019, Mark stepped aside, allowing Abba Moro to clinch the PDP ticket for the Benue South Senatorial District. Moro went on to win the general election, securing a resounding victory against his opponent, Steve Lawani of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

During the 2023 elections, Abba Moro successfully defended his seat, defeating close challengers such as Daniel Onjeh of the APC and Joe Ojobo of the Labour Party. Moro’s re-election highlights the confidence and trust that the people of Benue South have in his ability to advocate for their interests.

The senators who have represented Benue South since 1979 have played significant roles in shaping legislation, promoting development, and advocating for the rights of their constituents. Their tenures have contributed to the overall progress and well-being of the region, with each senator leaving their unique mark on the political landscape.

As the journey continues, it is expected that future representatives of Benue South will build upon the foundation laid by their predecessors, ensuring continued progress, effective representation, and improved livelihoods for the people they serve.
