The Benue State Police Command has apprehended five individuals in Makurdi for alleged impersonation and obtaining under false pretenses. The arrests were made during a targeted operation by the Command’s Cybercrime and Narcotics Department as part of efforts to curb cybercrime in the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Catherine Anene, disclosed the arrests in a statement on Thursday, identifying the suspects as Kwaghaondo John (21), Sunday Dominic (20), Uaan Aondowase Michael (21), Isaac Akpagher (18), and Suleiman Lawal (20).
Following an intelligence-led investigation, police operatives seized three iPhones, a small Tecno phone, and two other smartphones from the suspects. Further investigation revealed that they allegedly impersonated others to defraud unsuspecting victims.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Steve H. Yabanet, urged residents to remain vigilant against cybercrime activities and reaffirmed his commitment to combating crime in Benue. He warned those involved in cybercrime to cease or face legal consequences.
SP Anene confirmed that the suspects have been charged to court for prosecution.
