The Benue State University (BSU) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) has recently commenced an indefinite strike, leading to the closure of university gates.
Dr Kwaehfan Tarmombo, Chairman of ASUU BSU, has officially confirmed the commencement of the indefinite strike.
The university gates have been locked, preventing students and staff from accessing the campus.
Dr Tarmombo emphasized that the strike is comprehensive, total, and without a specified end date.
While specific details regarding the trigger of the strike were not disclosed by Dr Tarmombo, he attributed it to “several problems” with the university administration.
This suggests that there might be underlying issues or concerns that ASUU members at BSU are demanding to be addressed.
According to Dr John Ogi, a senior lecturer in the Department of Mass Communication at BSU, the university management locked the gates to prevent the scheduled ASUU congress from taking place.
The congress was intended to inform members about directives from the National Branch of ASUU.
The lockout at the gates led to an impromptu declaration of the strike action by the ASUU BSU Chairman, accompanied by members singing the solidarity song.
