Benue: We need protection – Gov Alia cries out after deadly attacks in Otobi

The Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has raised an urgent alarm over what he described as relentless and targeted attacks on rural communities in the state, appealing directly to the National Security Adviser (NSA) for immediate and stronger security support.
In an interview with AIT following the most recent violence in Otobi community, Otukpo Local Government Area, Governor Alia condemned the killings, labeling the attack as a deliberate attempt at land grabbing under the guise of random violence.
“These horrible, terrible fighters are in the front lines,” he told AIT. “They come and kill any person, irrespective of ethnicity, on their way. All the residents run away. They go back a few weeks, and then they come in full-fledged for occupation. This is land grabbing.”
According to the governor, at least 11 persons were killed in the attack, with several others injured and some still missing. He noted that homes were burnt down, forcing entire communities to flee for safety.
Governor Alia expressed deep frustration over the impunity surrounding the attacks, emphasizing the urgent need for federal intervention. “When you come in, kill so freely, and no one is apprehended, and then you move out and come and strike again, I think there’s every need for all of us to stay on alert,” he said.
The governor confirmed that security operatives were swiftly deployed to the area, including the deputy governor, the state’s Homeland Security unit, and the Commissioner of Police. However, he stressed that local efforts alone were no longer enough.
“I spoke with the NSA last night. There were a number of elements we discussed, and they are still going to respond to us, to see how much they can increase the protective gear for us, because it is deeply concerning,” he added.
While offering his condolences to the affected families, Governor Alia also called on residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by providing timely information.
