Benue: Where is Fr Alia’s commissioner-nominees list?

Since the assumption of office by Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia as the Governor of Benue State, the anticipation for the unveiling of his cabinet continues to grow. While his counterparts in other states are already busy working on intensive capital projects, Fr Alia is yet to announce his appointed cabinet members and hit the ground running.

The Benue State House of Assembly has claimed that the Governor, a suspended Catholic priest, submitted a list containing 14 nominees for screening and approval. However, to the disappointment of the public, the lawmakers have not made the list public, leaving citizens in the dark about the potential team members.

This delay in forming the cabinet has sparked questions and concerns among residents and political observers. Many wonder if Fr Alia is truly ready for governance and if his lack of preparedness is hampering the state’s progress. Supporters on social media have expressed their disappointment, calling for the Governor to take decisive action and fulfill his promises to the people.

Critics have voiced their opinions, suggesting that as a newcomer to the political sphere, Fr Alia should consider appointing a team of technocrats rather than merely rewarding party loyalists. The delay in forming a competent and experienced cabinet could hinder the state’s progress, especially when tackling complex issues and managing the affairs of the state.

Ejembi Adaje, a prominent party member from Benue South, expressed his concerns over the Governor’s delay in unveiling his cabinet. He urged Fr Alia to emulate other governors who have promptly appointed their teams, emphasizing the need to carry the people along in the governance process.

In addition to the political aspect, lecturers at the College of Education in Katsina-Ala cautioned against overlooking experienced individuals in favor of standing against godfathers’ influence. They believe that Fr Alia should surround himself with a competent team that can provide valuable insights and guide him through the intricacies of governance.

He said, “The people of Benue State had high hopes and expectations when they entrusted the state to Fr Alia, given his background as a cleric. However, if he fails to take decisive action and engage experienced individuals in his administration, he risks dashing the hopes of the people who placed their trust in him.
“The challenges facing the state require prompt and effective governance, and it is crucial for the Governor to live up to the expectations of his constituents.”
