Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has announced plans to establish a University of Agriculture, Science, and Technology in Ihugh, Vandeikya Local Government Area, as part of efforts to boost the state’s economy and produce specialized graduates to drive agricultural transformation.

Governor Alia made the disclosure during a thanksgiving Mass held at St. Winifred’s Parish, Ihugh, in honor of his newly appointed Special Adviser on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Denen Aondoakaa. He assured the people that preparations were underway to ensure the immediate takeoff of the institution.

“When established, the University will not only produce graduates but will also stimulate economic growth in the host community and across the state,” the Governor said.

Alia emphasized that the institution would engage young people in agricultural activities to ensure food security and help Benue retain its reputation as the Food Basket of the Nation. He noted that the University would focus on research to improve agricultural production and transform livelihoods in the state.

“The University will produce graduates who will conduct research aimed at enhancing agricultural productivity, thereby reducing poverty and improving living standards,” the Governor stated.

Governor Alia also warned against illegal taxes by landowners, commonly known as “matching ground.” He urged landowners in Ihugh not to take undue advantage of the proposed university by inflating land prices or imposing exploitative charges.

“I advise those with land at Ihugh market to avoid hiking prices beyond what is reasonable. The coming of this university should benefit everyone, not create hardship,” he warned.

Earlier in his sermon, Rev. Fr. Isaac Shalegh emphasized the importance of humility and thanksgiving. He commended Mr. Aondoakaa for returning to give thanks to God after his appointment, describing it as a thoughtful and commendable gesture.
