The family of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has announced the suspension of his two legal counsels, citing their inability to access their client who is currently detained at the Department of State Services (DSS) Headquarters in Abuja.
Kanu’s younger brother, Kanunta Kanu, took to Twitter on Thursday to disclose that Prof. Mike Ozekhome SAN and Barr. Ifeanyi Ejiofor have been relieved of their duties as Kanu’s legal representatives.
According to Kanunta, the decision was made due to the lawyers’ alleged failure to visit their client at the DSS headquarters and their purported obstruction of medical doctors who were scheduled to examine Kanu while in custody.
“After Nnamdi Kanu’s court appearance on May 11, 2023, Prof. Mike Ozekhome SAN has refused to see his client at the DSS headquarters in Abuja, despite several messages from MNK [Mazi Nnamdi Kanu] requesting to see him,” Kanunta stated.
“Secondly, they prevented medical doctors who were supposed to examine MNK on June 5th, even though they were duly informed on June 2nd, and MNK instructed them to inform his family to make the necessary arrangements.”
“For these obvious reasons and more, Prof. Mike Ozekhome SAN and Barr. Ifeanyi Ejiofor are hereby dismissed as Nnamdi Kanu’s counsels,” Kanunta further revealed.
He expressed the family’s appreciation for the time and efforts the legal counsels had dedicated thus far, while requesting them to promptly hand over the relevant legal documents.
