The Benue State House of Assembly has advanced the bill seeking to establish the Benue Education Quality Assurance Examination Board, as it successfully scaled through its second reading.

Leading the debate on Tuesday, the Majority Leader, Thomas Dugeri, explained that the key aim of the proposed law is to consolidate the Bureau of Education Quality Assurance and the Benue State Examinations Board into a single, more efficient body.

According to Mr. Dugeri, the bill is designed to revive the supervisory and monitoring mechanisms within the state’s education sector.

“The proposed legislation envisages enhanced standards and quality of education in basic and post-basic educational institutions across Benue.

“The foundation of any human enterprise is cardinal to its success and sustainability.

“Basic and post-basic education form the foundation of education, and standards at that level must not be compromised,” Mr. Dugeri said.

He further emphasized that the bill’s passage would establish a structured framework for effective oversight, ensuring proper supervision and enforcement of educational standards across the state.

Mr. Dugeri thereafter moved that the bill be read a second time and transmitted to the relevant committee for more legislative scrutiny.

The motion was seconded by the Minority Leader, Abu Umoru, who noted that the bill’s approval would go a long way in strengthening both the primary and secondary education systems in Benue.

Following the second reading, the Clerk of the House, Bem Mela, read the bill before Speaker Alfred Emberga, who subsequently referred it to the House Standing Committee on Rules and Business for consideration ahead of its third reading scheduled for Wednesday.
