Blackout in Nigeria as national electricity grid collapses

Nigerians are facing an extended period of power outage due to the reported failure of the national grid system managed by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) based in Osogbo, Osun State.

According to reports, the grid’s capacity plummeted to a mere 273 megawatts, originating from only two of the more than 27 electricity generation sources.

Multiple Distribution Companies have confirmed the grid’s failure, which occurred at 00:41 AM. They revealed that many of their distribution feeders are currently inactive.

At 4:00 AM on Thursday, only five power plants were operational on the grid, with Afam VI producing 0.70MW, Dadinkowa registering 0.00MW, Ibom Power generating 32.90MW, Jebba contributing 240MW, and Olorunsogo showing zero power generation.

At around 1 AM, the total grid power was a mere 35MW, indicating a complete collapse of the power system in the country. However, by the time of this report, the grid had slightly recovered to 273MW.

As of now, the TCN has not provided any response to inquiries from our correspondent regarding this situation.
