Ace comedian and social activist, Enenche Enenche, has condemned the crisis that broke out in Sokoto, over the arrest of the suspected killer of Deborah Samuel.

IDOMA VOICE reports that several residential buildings and churches were torched by angry youths who are demanding the release of ‘their brothers’ who were arrested for alleged jungle justice.

This has forced the state government of Sokoto to declare a 24-hours curfew.

Reacting in an article entitled, Sokoto: Another burden of Nigeria, the entertainer said, “Let’s go ahead and burn down Sokoto, burn everything while your counterparts elsewhere are building. When they see nothing to burn again, they will begin to burn each other.”

His article reads below:

Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates were busy building, we were busy burning down. Today, Nigerians want to go to Dubai, Abu Dhabi.

When we burnt down Kaduna, Kano, Yola, Maiduguri and Jos, there were “justifiable” reasons to “burn them” just as there is a “justifiable” reason to burn Sokoto state today.

Blasphemy is a redline in Islam according to many thoughts, and I don’t support it in any guise but while first-world Islamic nations have a system in place to address it, ours is archaic in approach. We burn down everything, rebuild and burn again.

We Nigerians love to treat symptoms and not the real disease. After Nigeria’s first military coup in 1966, religion became a tool of mobilisation in the North and this tool has gone through several stages of metamorphosis in the hands of those that selfishly know how to pull the strings to gain control.

Those on the streets may think they are fighting a holy war, but may never know when they have become political tools in the hands of those who perfectly know how to hijack their sensibilities and emotions for selfish gains.

Let’s go ahead and burn down Sokoto, burn everything while your counterparts elsewhere are building. When they see nothing to burn again, they will begin to burn each other.

Until we begin to treat the root cause and not the symptoms, our days of “burning” from either in the form of religious riots to exploits of “unknown gunmen”, to herders/farmers clashes to banditry and militancy are far from over.
