The Benue State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described Monday night’s attack on the camp for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) at Abagena on the outskirts of Makurdi by militia herdsmen as the height of provocation.
State Chairman of the Party, Sir John Ngbede, noted that the attack amounts to wickedness taken too far by those same merchants of death who forced the people into living as destitute in the IDPs camps to now go there to visit further killings and destruction on them.
Bemgba Iortyom, State Publicity Secretary, quoted Ngbede as expressing worry that despite concerted efforts by Governor Samuel Ortom towards ensuring peace and security for citizens in the state, militia herdsmen and their collaborators are bent on frustrating those efforts by their sustained attacks on Benue communities.
He lamented that in the last two weeks alone, several communities, many on the outskirts of Makurdi, the state’s capital city, have come under murderous attacks by militia herdsmen, resulting in numerous deaths and injuries as well as destruction of properties and displacement of people.
The Benue PDP helmsman expressed shock that the Federal Government which controls all security agencies is watching on in seeming helplessness as the country slides into palpable chaos and anarchy.
He further called on the Federal Government to rise up to its sworn responsibility to protect lives and properties of Nigerians and save the country from impending implosion and the attendant mayhem before it becomes late.
Sir John Ngbede also empathised with those who lost loved ones in the gruesome attacks and prays that God Almighty speedily brings judgment on the perpetrators and their sponsors.
