Nigerian comedian Bovi Ugboma, popularly known as Bovi, has revealed that his child, who broke his television three times, has speech and communication issues.

In an interview, Bovi spoke out against the practice of flogging children as punishment for misbehavior. He argued that flogging might sometimes be more about expressing frustration or for amusement rather than for corrective purposes.

Bovi shared the story of his child breaking the television three times, yet he chose not to punish the child. His parenting approach sparked criticism from several Nigerian netizens, including his followers.

Defending his stance on X (formerly Twitter), Bovi explained that his father never physically punished him, yet he turned out successful. He wrote, “I may have triggered angry people with the phrase ‘for the fun of it.’ Please don’t be upset. In trying to color my point, I’ve offended a shallow mob. You don’t have to agree with me. If you want to beat your children, go ahead. My dad never physically beat me, and I turned out almost okay.”

One of his fans, Mayowa Adedeji, commented that Bovi’s discipline method wasn’t working, pointing out that breaking three televisions indicated a problem. “If your child has to break 3 TVs, it only means your technique is not working. No one is talking about beating a child here,” Adedeji wrote.

In response, Bovi clarified that his child had a speech impediment and communication challenges, which were just beginning to improve. “My child had a speech impediment and a communication problem that’s only just starting to improve,” he said.
