BREAKING: 37 persons rescued as two-storey plaza collapses in Garki, Abuja

A two-storey plaza situated on Lagos Street in Garki Village, part of the Garki District in Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria, has tragically collapsed.

The incident occurred during the late hours of Wednesday night amidst intense heavy rainfall.

Emergency officials have reported that 37 individuals have been successfully rescued from the scene so far, although two of them are unfortunately “fatally injured.”

Throughout the night, rescue operations progressed at a slower pace due to the absence of immediate access to an excavator, necessitating manual efforts.

Dr. Abbas Idriss, the Director General of the FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), confirmed the occurrence and stated that the rescued victims have been transferred to various medical facilities within Abuja.

He acknowledged the challenging circumstances and the collaborative endeavors of stakeholders, including community members, to manually extract trapped individuals.

Dr. Idriss highlighted the ongoing rescue mission and expressed anticipation for the arrival of equipment to enhance and expedite the operations.
