A tanker explosion in Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State has claimed the lives of at least 94 people, with 50 others injured. The tragic incident occurred near Khadija University in Majia town at around 11:30 p.m., according to the state police spokesperson, DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam.
DSP Shiisu confirmed that the explosion happened when a petrol tanker, with registration number KMC 6412 F, driven by 32-year-old Yusuf Mohd from Hotoro Quarters, Kano State, lost control while traveling from Kano to Nguru in Yobe State.
Despite warnings and efforts by the police to cordon off the area, a crowd managed to overpower the officers and access the scene, which may have exacerbated the casualty count.
The injured have been taken to General Hospital Ringim for treatment, while a mass burial for the deceased is scheduled for Wednesday morning.
