BREAKING: Abuja Airport closed after cargo plane loses control on runway
An Allied Air Cargo aircraft with registration number 5N-JRT veered off Runway 22 at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, leading to a temporary closure of the airport.
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) confirmed the incident, which occurred at 10:05 a.m., and stated that five individuals were on board. All passengers were safely evacuated without any injuries.
In a statement, Mrs. Obiageli Orah, FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, said:
“The Airport Emergency Response Team, along with accident investigators, is on-site. Efforts are underway to clear the runway, which is expected to reopen for operations as soon as possible. We appreciate the aviation community and the public for their patience and understanding. We urge everyone to refrain from speculation until the Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) releases its preliminary report.”
The evacuees were taken to the FAAN clinic for precautionary medical checks. The incident has attracted the attention of aviation stakeholders, with restoration efforts currently ongoing to resume normal airport operations.
