Tensions flared at the national headquarters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Thursday as protesters from the Cross Rivers State chapter of the party stormed the party head office to voice their grievances over what they claimed was the misappropriation of their allocated position.
Scores of demonstrators converged on the party’s central offices, clashing with stern-looking security personnel, all while demanding the reversal of a decision regarding the National Women Leader position.
This position had been held by Dr. Betty Edu, but was recently reassigned to a representative from Edo State.
Despite their efforts, the protesters were denied access to the inner premises of the APC national secretariat. The protest unfolded mere hours before the scheduled inauguration of freshly elected members of the National Working Committee (NWC).
Chanting slogans and brandishing placards high above their heads, the demonstrators expressed their dissatisfaction, asserting that the recent appointments represented a grave injustice. Among the points of contention was the replacement of the outgoing National Deputy Chairman for the Northern region, Senator Abubakar Kyari, with Ali Dalori, the chairman of the Borno party. Additionally, Dr. Mary Idele from Edo State, the founder of Sister-To-Sister Empowerment Worldwide, was selected to assume the role of National Women Leader—a role formerly occupied by Dr. Betta Edu.
The protesters’ collective lamentations resounded, decrying the perceived imbalance and unfairness of the decisions.
Simultaneously, the National Working Committee disclosed a fresh roster of elected zonal officers for the NWC on the preceding Wednesday in the capital city, Abuja.
The National Secretary of the APC, Senator Ajibola Basiru, clarified that the election outcomes were in line with the mandates established during a meeting convened on August 3rd, 2023, at the Transcorp Hilton in Abuja.
