Tensions have escalated in Enugu State after reports emerged of the alleged killing of three residents during protests that engulfed the Coal City metropolis.
According to DAILY POST, the protests initially stemmed from traders taking to the streets on Wednesday morning, in response to the State government’s decision to seal their shops for not opening for business on Monday. The traders expressed their discontent through the protest, seeking a resolution to the closure of their businesses.
However, the situation quickly turned violent, with at least three people reportedly losing their lives due to gunshots. Video clips circulating online depict the lifeless bodies of two young men and a lady, further fueling the tension in the area.
Security forces were deployed to disperse the protesters, but the origins of the gunshots remain unclear at this stage. The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, released a statement to journalists, assuring that normalcy has been restored in the Ogbete Market area and its surroundings.
The police spokesperson revealed that what had initially begun as a peaceful protest by the traders was hijacked and turned into a violent incident. He urged both traders and citizens to maintain law and order, advocate for peaceful means of expressing their grievances, and cooperate with the authorities.
As a result of the concerning events, the Commissioner of Police has ordered a full-scale investigation into the matter. The authorities aim to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the reported casualties and will provide further updates as investigations progress.
