BREAKING: Court sacks Sanusi as Emir of Kano

A Federal High Court sitting in Kano has nullified the reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano.

In its Thursday verdict, the court also invalidated all actions taken following the controversial reinstatement.

Presiding judge Justice Abdullahi Muhammad Liman stated, “I hereby order that every step taken by the Government is nullified, invalid, and has no legal effect. This decision does not impact the validity of the repealed Emirates Law but pertains to actions taken by the Governor, including assenting to the Law and reappointing Sanusi.”

Justice Liman added, “I have listened to the governor’s statements in both Hausa and English after assenting to the Law, and I am convinced that the respondents were aware of the order to maintain the status quo pending the hearing and determination of the motions on notice in court.

“Given the respondents’ awareness of the court order, the court exercises its power to set aside actions that violate its order. It is a very serious matter for anyone to flout the court’s orders and expect to escape consequences.”

He remarked that the catastrophic situation could have been avoided if the respondents had followed due process and complied with the court order, which would still have allowed them to carry out their duties.

Instead, the respondents chose to act according to their whims, leading to a serious predicament.
