BREAKING: Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru resigns
Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru Abubakar has stepped down from office with immediate effect.
His decision was formally conveyed to President Bola Tinubu through a letter dated December 1, in which he explained that he was leaving the position due to health-related reasons.
Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, confirmed the development, noting that President Tinubu has accepted the minister’s resignation and expressed appreciation for his contributions to the administration.
The President is expected to notify the Senate of who will take over the defence portfolio later in the week.
Badaru, 63, previously served two terms as governor of Jigawa State between 2015 and 2023 before being appointed as Minister of Defence on August 21, 2023.
His exit coincides with President Tinubu’s recent proclamation of a national security emergency, with further details of the initiative expected to be unveiled soon.
