An investigative journalist, Adejuwon Soyinka, has been arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

IDOMA VOICE reports that Soyinka, the Regional Editor of The Conversation Africa, was detained on Sunday.

According to a distress message sent to The PUNCH by one of his friends, Soyinka was apprehended shortly after arriving from the United Kingdom. No reason was provided for his arrest, and he has since been held incommunicado.

The message stated, “Adejuwon Soyinka has been detained by officers of the Department of State Security at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

The incident occurred around 5:40 am on Sunday, August 25, 2024, shortly after he arrived in Nigeria on a Virgin Atlantic flight from the United Kingdom. As of this report, no reason has been given for his detention by the security agency, and Soyinka has not been reachable as messages and calls to his phone have gone unanswered.”

When contacted, DSS spokesperson Peter Afunanya said he was unaware of Soyinka’s arrest. “I am not aware of the matter you have raised and have no comments on it,” he stated.
