Following reports of another round of EndSars protests, authorities have deployed policemen and soldiers to the Lekki Toll Plaza in Lagos.
Several sources told our reporters that the Lekki Toll Plaza, which was one of the key #endsars protest spots became heavily guarded by security officials from the early hours of December 7.
Others say an unusual number of policemen were spotted at the Lagos National Stadium in Surulere and the Allen Junction, Ikeja.
Recall that the Lagos State Government and the police have sternly warned against any form of protests following the violence that ensued across the country when hoodlums hijacked the peaceful #endsars protests in October which led to the loss of lives and properties.
The country was nearly driven to the state of anarchy after a live video showed soldiers shooting at unarmed protesters at the Lekki Toll Plaza on October 20, 2020.
The violence that followed led to the loss of lives and destruction of properties across the country.
According to the Inspector General of Police, up to 22 policemen were killed by hoodlums, 205 police stations were destroyed, and a lot of other critical private and public infrastructure including hospitals were destroyed.
Speaking on the destruction caused by the aftermath of the #Endsars protest, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila disclosed that Lagos State will need about N1 trillion to rebuild the properties and infrastructure vandalized in the state.
The EndSars protest began on social media with youths calling out to the government to scrap the police unit notorious for exploitation and extrajudicial killings and harassment.
However, the government’s prompt scrapping of the SARS unit and announcement of its replacement (SWAT) triggered the youths who already had little faith in their leaders.
The youths, therefore, refused to leave the streets until they see an apparent end of police brutality and a Government with more youth inclusive policies.
