The management of the Federal College of Forestry in Ibadan has taken the decision to temporarily suspend the institution’s activities until further notice. This action follows a recent clash that transpired between the college’s staff and students and some operatives from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Earlier this week, tension ran high at the college when EFCC personnel made an unannounced visit. Dele Oyewale, the Head of Media and Publicity for the EFCC, explained in a statement to DAILY POST that the Ibadan Zonal Command had dispatched seven operatives to conduct a routine verification exercise on a surety named Azeez Kazeem Oluwakemi. Oluwakemi had stood as a guarantor for Alakinde Khalid Kolawole, a suspect in the commission’s custody, who is being investigated for internet fraud.
According to Oyewale, the EFCC agents’ visit was intended to verify Oluwakemi’s identity and address, as is standard procedure. However, the situation took a tumultuous turn when students and staff of the college confronted and detained the EFCC operatives, leading to a chaotic confrontation.
The EFCC made it clear that they had previously informed the college community about the purpose of the EFCC team’s visit. Following the incident, Mr. Kehinde Olawale, the Public Relations Officer of the college, confirmed during a telephone conversation with DAILY POST that the decision to close the institution had been made to alleviate the prevailing tension.
Olawale stated, “The school has been closed to douse tension. We have gone to Eleyele Police Station to complain. We have sent a circular to the students. What we have decided to do now is close down the school. We don’t want to see any student for now; this was done to douse the tension.”
